Follow these steps to turn off automatic updates windows 10 temporarily: 

  1. All you have to do is head to the search bar and search for ‘Settings’. 
  2. Look for the ‘Update & Security’ section.
  3. Once you enter this section, click on the ‘Windows Update’ options from the left hand side menu. 
  4. Scroll down to find the ‘Advanced Options’ button.
  5. Once you enter this section, you will find a box for ‘Pause Until’
  6. From the drop down menu under this, select for how long you would like to pause the automatic update. 
  7. And that’s all there is to it! 

Windows 10 Stop Automatic Updates: Via Group Policy  

Via the group policy, you can turn off automatic updates to Windows 10 pro permanently. Follow these steps to do so: 

  1. Head to the search bar on your system and search for ‘gpedit.msc’
  2. Click on the very first search result. 
  3. This will lead you to the Local Group Policy Editor. 
  4. Once you enter the editor, follow this path- Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates > Windows Components > Windows Update
  5. Once you have done this, look for ‘Configure Automatic Updates’ on the right hand side menu.
  6. Once you double click on this, you will get the option to ‘Disable’ on the left hand side.
  7. Hit ‘Apply’ and then ‘OK’ to finish this.  
  8. This will permanently turn off any future updates in your Windows.

Disable Windows Update in Windows 10: Via Registry   

Before discussing the third and final method for Windows 10 stop automatic updates, we would like to point out that you have to proceed with caution for this one. 

In order to disable update via Registry, follow these steps: 

  1. Head to the search bar and search for ‘regedit’.
  2. Click on the very first search result.
  3. This will launch the Registry Editor on your screen. 
  4. Once you enter the editor, follow this path- HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE > SOFTWARE > Policies > Microsoft > Windows
  5. Now from the left hand side menu, click on ‘Window’. This will open another list. 
  6. From here click on the ‘New’ button, and then on the ‘Key’ button. 
  7. Name the new key as ‘Windows Update’ and press Enter to save it.
  8. Now right click on this particular key, and then again click on the ‘New’ button and choose the ‘Key’ button. 
  9. Name this new Key as AU and press Enter to save it. 
  10. Now right click on this new key and click on ‘New’.
  11. You will see a drop down menu. Select the ‘DWORD (32-bit) Value’ button. 
  12. Name the new key as ‘No Auto Update’ and again press Enter to save it. 
  13. Now double click on this particular key and a dialogue box will appear.
  14. In the Value data field, change the value from 0 to 1. 
  15. Click on the ‘OK’ button and then Restart your computer. 
  16. That’s it!
